The Bulldog Club of Greater Cleveland Inc. was organized in 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio by a small group of bulldog owners wanting to improve the quality of bulldog breed and to exhibit at dog shows.
One person in that group was a Mr. Lowenthal, his son Sheldon is still with us today. Dolly and Burt Blowers, Dick and Hilda Muckle and the Bill Gorecks were also early members. Other members in the 40's, 50's and 60's, were the Schiletz Family, Mildred Johnson, Al and Clair Rosen, The Materna family and the Sevilles. Asa club we have had members from all over Northern Ohio.
The original dues were $2.00 for adult members and $1.00 for junior members. We still have an active junior membership program.
We have had a specialty show with sweepstakes yearly since 1933. As a club we have hosted both the Division II specialty show and Puppy Matches. One of our most memorable Puppy Matches was held at the Schiletz home in Richfield, Ohio. Bob Hetherington was the judge and over one-hundered puppies showed up. Needless to say, Bob missed his flight home that evening. We have had members, and still do, who travel great distance to support both the national, divison and local club specialites.
At present we have about 60 members both active and life who enjoy their bulldogs and support the Bulldog Club of Greater Cleveland as well as the Bulldog clube of America.
We usually meet the first Tuesday evening of every month in the Cleveland / Akron area and have had an increased number of new members.
Anyone interested in more information about the club can contact either Margaret Materna at 330-666-4885 or Sue Martin at 330-699-6906.
